A field guide to reusable prompt structures

A prompt pattern is a recurring and reusable textual structure, expressed in a canonical form, that can be instantiated within a prompt to support a specific intention in an interaction with an LLM.

Taxonomy structure

Taxonomy organization and component annotation

Category and subcategory form the two-level taxonomy. Prompt components are separate annotations indicating where a pattern can be instantiated within a prompt.

A prompting strategy that groups patterns by the primary prompting intention they support.

The canonical, recurring textual structure that can be instantiated in a concrete prompt.

Annotation

A functional part of a prompt that the pattern helps realize. A pattern may annotate more than one component.

A top-level grouping by the primary prompting strategy a pattern supports.
Subcategory
A finer strategy grouping within one category.
Component
A complementary annotation showing which functional prompt part a pattern can realize, not another taxonomy level.
Pattern
A recurring and reusable textual structure that supports a specific prompting intention.
Name
The unique canonical taxonomy name.
Intent
The prompting intention supported by the pattern.
Motivation
Why the pattern may be useful; presented separately here for readability.
Application conditions
When to apply the pattern and when to avoid it or use caution.
Variables
The variable information needed to instantiate the pattern.
Cardinality
How many values a variable permits or requires: required means exactly one, optional means zero or one, one-or-more means at least one, and zero-or-more means any number.
